El ''asma'' es una enfermedad crónica del sistema respiratorio caracterizada por vías aéreas hiperreactivas ( es decir, un incremento en la respuesta broncoconstrictora del árbol bronquial). Las vías aéreas más finas disminuyen ocasional y reversiblemente de calibre por contraerse su musculatura lisa o por ensanchamiento de su mucosa al inflamarse y producir mucosidad, por lo general en respuesta a uno o más factores desencadenantes como la exposición a un medio ambiente inadecuado (frio, húmedo o alergénico), el ejercicio o esfuerzo en pacientes hiper-reactivos, o el estrés emocional. En los niños los desencadenantes más frecuentes son las enfermedades comunes como aquellas que causan el resfriado común.

Ese estrechamiento causa obstrucción y por tanto dificultad para pasar el aire que es en gran parte reversible, a diferencia de la bronquitis crónica donde hay escasa reversibilidad. Cuando los síntomas del asma empeoran, se produce una crisis de asma. Por lo general son crisis respiratorias de corta duración, aunque puede haber períodos con ataques asmáticos diarios que pueden persistir por varias semanas. En una crisis severa, las vías respiratorias pueden cerrarse tanto que los órganos vitales no reciben suficiente oxígeno. En esos casos, la crisis asmática puede provocar la muerte.

El asma provoca síntomas tales como respiración sibilante, falta de aire (polipnea y taquipnea), opresión en el pecho y tos improductiva durante la noche o temprano en la mañana. Entre las exacerbaciones se intercalan períodos asintomáticos donde la mayoría de los pacientes se sienten bien, pero pueden tener síntomas leves, como permanecer sin aliento - después de hacer ejercicio - durante períodos más largos de tiempo que un individuo no afectado, que se recupera antes. Normalmente, cuando uno se lesiona, ciertas proteínas se activan y viajan al sitio de la lesión para ayudar a detener el sangrado. Sin embargo, en las personas con coagulación intravascular diseminada, estas proteínas se vuelven anormalmente activas.

Se forman pequeños coágulos de sangre dentro de los vasos sanguíneos. Algunos de estos coágulos pueden taponar los vasos y cortar el suministro de sangre a diversos órganos, como el hígado o el riñón, los cuales luego dejarán de funcionar. Los síntomas principales de la diabetes mellitus son emisión excesiva de orina (poliuria), aumento anormal de la necesidad de comer (polifagia), incremento de la sed (polidipsia), y pérdida de peso sin razón aparente. La Organización Mundial de la Salud reconoce tres formas de diabetes mellitus: tipo 1, tipo 2 y diabetes gestacional (ocurre durante el embarazo), cada una con diferentes causas y con distinta incidencia. Se denomina gestación, embarazo o gravidez (del latín gravitas) al período de tiempo que transcurre entre la implantación en el útero del óvulo fecundado y el momento del parto. La ''hemofilia'' es una enfermedad genética ligada al cromosoma X que consiste en la dificultad de la sangre para coagularse adecuadamente. Se caracteriza por la aparición de hemorragias internas y externas debido a la deficiencia parcial de una proteína coagulante denominada globulina antihemofílica (factor de coagulación).

Los factores de coagulación son un grupo de proteínas responsables de activar el proceso de coagulación. Hay identificados 13 factores ( I, II, ..., XIII. El factor IV no ha sido asignado). Los factores de coagulación actúan en cascada, es decir, uno activa al siguiente; si se es deficitario de un factor, no se produce la coagulación o se retrasa mucho.

Cuando hay carencia o déficit de algún factor de coagulación, la sangre tarda más tiempo en formar el coágulo y, aunque llegue a formarse, no es consistente y no se forma un buen tapón para detener la hemorragia, por tanto, en los hemofílicos graves, incluso pequeñas heridas pueden originar abundantes y hasta mortales pérdidas de sangre. La agregación plaquetaria no está alterada en los hemofílicos (el tiempo de sangrado de Ivy es normal). También es patognomónico el hemartrosis (sangrado interno de las articulaciones), pues en ellas no se encuentra factor tisular, que es el desencadenante de la vía extrínseca de la coagulación, la única funcionante en hemofílicos.

Hay tres variedades de hemofilia: la hemofilia A, cuando hay un déficit del factor VIII de coagulación, la hemofilia B, cuando hay un déficit del factor IX de coagulación, y la C, que es el déficit del factor XI.

La hepatitis es una afección o enfermedad inflamatoria que afecta al hígado. Su causa puede ser infecciosa (viral, bacteriana, etc.), inmunológica (por auto-anticuerpos) o tóxica (por ejemplo por alcohol, venenos o fármacos). También es considerada, dependiendo de su etiología, una enfermedad de transmisión sexual.

Hay virus específicos para la hepatitis, es decir, aquellos que sólo provocan hepatitis. Existen muchos: virus A, virus B, C, D, E, F, G. Los más importantes son los virus A, B, C y, en menor medida, el D y el E, siendo los últimos, F y G los últimos descritos y los menos estudiados.

Otros virus no específicos son:

La ''ictericia'' es la coloración amarillenta de la piel y mucosas debida a un aumento de la bilirrubina (valores normales de 0,3 a 1 mg/dl) que se acumula en los tejidos, sobre todo aquellos con mayor número de fibras elásticas (paladar, conjuntiva). Se hace clínicamente evidente cuando la bilirrubina es mayor de 2 a 2,5 mg/dl. Este aumento puede ser a expensas de la fracción no conjugada o "indirecta" de la bilirrubina (BI); ésta es liposoluble y no se filtra por el riñón, por lo que no aparece coluria. Cuando el aumento es a expensas de la bilirrubina conjugada o "directa" (BD), al ser ésta hidrosoluble, se filtra por el riñón, apareciendo coluria. Puede haber aumentos de ambas fracciones y se habla entonces de hiperbilirrubinemia mixta.
